our digs: where we brush our teeth

So there's this little memory that I hope to never forget about this bathroom of ours (nothing gross, I promise). We have a tiny bathroom. A very tiny bathroom. It's cute. I love it. But it's hella tiny. Well, every once in a while Dan and I are lucky enough to end up brushing our teeth at the exact same time in this itty bitty bathroom of ours. And it never fails. In comes Sherman. He never wants to miss out on anything. So here's Dan and I ... literally standing on each other's feet trying to figure out who should spit first in our itty bitty sink in our itty bitty bathroom. And Sherman is shoving his big ole head between us, his obnoxiously large (and loud) tail whacking against every wall while doing so.

It is at this point (and it never fails) that I start laughing.
Which causes me to swallow toothpaste. Which causes me to choke.
Which causes Dan to laugh.
Which causes Sherman to bark.

It is truly the funniest thing ever.
Ok, so maybe you just have to be there.

BEFORE ...

DURING ...

AFTER ...
And I'll say it again. We're kind of simple. This is it for us.
No twelve kinds of body wash for this crazy couple.
We like febreze.
And toilet paper.
The best part about the bathroom. Hands down.
Dan was smart enough to install an electrical outlet inside the medicine cabinet.
And this is why I love my husband. That ... and he cooks.
Oh and guess what?! After all of this work ... we get to do it all over again. No joke. Dan is "not happy" with this bathroom. His next project is to rip out all of the tile in the shower and remove that little window (he hates that window) and do it all over again. ALL OVER AGAIN (minus a few things, but still). This seriously brings me to tears. Another day. Another home improvement. And speaking of home improvement ... I only have a couple more rooms to show you. Phew. Which means that my crazy little job will hopefully be slowing down soon. And if it doesn't ... I'll need more wine.

What we did:
  • Uhhh, everything?
  • The bathroom was taken down to the studs
  • New drywall (new walls, new floor, new ceiling)
  • New tile
  • New sink/toilet/tub
  • New light/fan
  • New trim
  • Painted walls and trim
  • And anything else that I forgot ... we did

P.S. Your comments from the last few DIY posts are cracking me up. One comment will be "thanks for keeping it real" and the next will be "you liar, your house is NOT that clean all the time" (or something to that effect). ;) ... So here's the truth. I didn't clean before taking these pictures. I swear. I was going to take a picture of the bathroom this morning before I left the house just to prove to you that I'm not a liar (but then I overslept by two hours, oops). But I can promise you that the only difference in the bathroom this morning was that there was a cotton ball in the trash can. A cotton ball! Oh the horror. Guys, I promise. I am keeping it real. I like to clean. And organize. And throw things away. It's not illegal. Oh and keep in mind ... I suck at cooking. And crafting. And pretty much everything else that some {most} women are good at. So, I clean.

  1. Okay, so if your house is this clean all the time, I don't know if you can come to mine... eep!
Although, I keep telling Paul he's welcome to a second wife as long as she cooks and cleans. I feel like I could bend my morals a bit for a nice meal and magically cleaned bathrooms.

Also, I can't pee alone. The cat sees that as prime bonding time. And she RUNS through the house when she hears Paul get in the shower- because she sits outside the door and tells him ALLLLLLL her stories. It's hilarious! So yeah. Bathrooms + pets = ridiculosity.

  2. WOW it looks great! By your title all I could think of was the video "Teach Me How To Brushy". HAHA! In case you haven't seen it, here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ugQLL65BKc

  3. First of all, I wish I could oversleep by 2 hours.

And, I thought our vanity was small. It looks massive next to yours. I think it's a sign of a good marriage if you can deal with each other in a small bathroom!

  4. Soo cute!!! Love the wall color and tiles!!!

  5. I freakin love that bathroom. However, I'm with Dan about re-doing. Well, I'm with him about re-doing mine. I HATE my two bathrooms and they are brand new.

I blame my father. I got home from work and he bought me all the fixtures for them, thinking he did me a favor. He did not.

Also, I'm with YOU on keeping things clean. I can't handle a messy house.

  6. You have officially motivated me to re-do our bathroom! We have a tiny one that needs updated badly but our lazy butts just haven't done it yet. Yours is GORGEOUS!!!

  7. I like your itty bitty bathroom. Even if you sometimes step on feet and choke on toothpaste.

  8. i love the glass shelves!! i need something like that in my bathroom.... right now our storage consists of the tiniest, cheapest vanity from home depot and one of those ugly metal shelves that stands over the toilet, except it doesn't fit over the toilet, so it's stuck in the corner with our laundry bin beneath it. it's SAD. i need real shelves, and real containers (right now my cotton face pads and qtips are in an index card holder sitting out in the open on that ugly metal toilet shelf).

oh, that, and the door doesn't shut. stupid old houses and stupid foundation shifting!!

i like your bathroom, no, i love it! and it's not small. try looking at bathrooms in NYC and then TRY to think it's small!! haha

looks great to me!! can we steal dan for a week to redo my bathroom instead of yours??

  12. hey! i have that same basket as you, except mine is full of a bunch of crap that gets left out in our living room.. and then we have guests coming over so i stuff them to clean.
and i like the hubs state farm shirt ;) i may or may not work there and am biased towards them.

    have a wonderful thursday!!

ps - our bathroom is small and we run into the same issues. minus sherman.

  14. My bathroom is equally as tiny. I love to hate it.
I with ya on keeping it simple on the body wash choices. I would waste so much water (more than I already do) just trying to choose what scent I want to use today.

  15. i LOVE you guys for this- i feel like we are living in parallel universes of house remodeling! bahahaha and oh man... i can only imagine how many projects we have to re-do (or have had to redo) because we weren't happy! it's like shooting yourself in the foot, i imagine...

your master is the size of our guest bathroom! what gives?! i would inevitably be laughing while brushing my teeth, then end up spitting all over the mirror..

and an electrical outlet IN the medicine cabinet? GENIUS, my friend. PURE. GENIUS.

i say, once all of us are done with our houses (which will never happen on our end.. will it happen on yours?) we all take a relaxing, camping adventure somewhere awesome...

  17. Tiff, I absolutely adore you, your handy as hell hubby, the Sherminator, and your perfectly clean house. I wish I had the motivation to clean as much as you do. But I cook, soooo I guess that will be my excuse for not cleaning as often. Loving the tour! :)

  20. Beautiful! Maggie is just like Sherman in needing to be right in the middle of the action all the time. Our bathrooms are small, so that's sometimes an issue, but the biggest issue is in the kitchen! It's approximately the size of a postage stamp. When two of us get in there and Maggie decides to join, a lot of bumping and dropping of food occurs. Which means Maggie gets to clean up a lot of dropped food! I'm just beginning to realize that there might be a method to her madness!

  21. Loving the home tour. Kind of makes me want to do one of my house but I'm not nearly as neat and orderly as you to want to take pics of every room!

  22. You guys rock, I am more and more impressed with your DIY skills each day! And the story about all three of you at the sink is cracking me up... not so much a problem with my 20lb dog... but Sher, yea he is a bit on the large size!

  23. Ugh, I have the same sized bathroom, and mine does NOT look that swanky! How do you keep Sherman from eating that basket of toilet paper goodness? My yellow lab eats it right off of the roll... no joke. Thanks for keepin' it really real. :)

  24. Love it! I've always loved a clean and simple bathroom.

  25. Can I barrow Dan for a few weeks to get some stuff done at my house? I'll feed him and give him a bed to sleep in and no I am not talking about my bed so get your mind outta the gutter. He can even cuddle with Rylie and Zoe so he doesnt miss Sherman. K? Thanks!

  26. You have one hell of a handyman!! Love all of the decor too!

  27. lol in my bathroom you would find Bob's underwear along with his socks and q-tips on the counter 'cuz the garbage can was just a lil too far?? Your bathroom is amazing and so cute. I can't believe he wants to re-do it! Tell him to just ship the tile to me in CA we're getting ready to buy tile for the bathroom.. And the story with Sherm in the bathroom was hilarious I could totally picture it.

  30. Such a cute story.. just you, Dan, and your little fur baby stuffed into an itty bitty bathroom. Something about that is so darn sweet! Haha. But in all seriousness, your bathroom is so chic and pretty. And I don't usually say that about bathrooms.

  31. Wow - It looks fabulous! I honestly think your tiny bathroom is bigger than my tiny bathroom. I've been craving a new shower curtain lately (weird craving) but once I buy one I think I'll do a quick post on the glories of a teeny tiny bathroom. Easier to clean, right??

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm always amazed by you two.

Love the new bathroom....especially the color!

  33. I love the teeth brushing story. Sounds like our life but in every other area other than the bathroom. We have separate bathrooms...life saver in our world. BUT Floyd is ALWAYS in the middle of us at any other moment of the day. ALWAYS. We always sing, 'we are the 3 best friends' from the Hangover because he is constantly in between us. And he would not have it any other way. And, to be honest, neither would we.

  34. Um, Dan's a genius. I stopped using my Sonicare tooth brush just because I was sick of it cluttering up my bathroom counter with the cord sprawling everywhere. Can we borrow him really quick?

    1. Oh, I should add. I do brush my teeth still just in case you were wondering. I just use the old boring manual labor kind.

in other news, we have a very similar GIANT BASKET FULL OF TOILET PAPER going on at our place.

  37. OKAY..that's it!! NO MORE reading your blog!! JUST KIDDING...I'm sure I'll be patiently awaiting to read your post tomorrow (or not so patiently waiting...sometimes I think I have an obsession when I've checked every half hour to see if you, my Sister or Mrs. E have blogged for the day!) Your house is this clean all the time???? I convinced myself you surely did a cleanup because you knew you were going to be taking pictures. No fair! I'd seriously have to hire Merry Maids to come in before I would even remotely consider you taking pictures of my house & then posting them for the world to see...actually I wouldn't have to worry about posting pictures of my house anyway because I don't have a Dan to completely redo my old worn out farmhouse! ; ) Admiring all you have done!

But yeah even your bathroom is cute. It makes me feel calm. And that's how you should feel when using the bathroom, right?

I love the the tile in it, but I agree with Dan, I don't think I'd be to fond of a window IN the shower lol :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love it! But I wouldn't want to do it all over again just for that. Dan is ambitious!

And dog tails beating on bathroom doors and walls? Daily occurrence around these parts too!

  47. You know what I notice from all of your renovation pictures? Your husband really likes the Rambo-dana.

My cat has to be in the bathroom with me. It never fails. He never wants to go in when Ammon's in there, but if I'm there? That little turn needs his litter box, dang it!
