our digs: where we put our guests

This room actually serves several purposes right now. First and foremost, this is where we put our guests when they come to visit. So, I hope you all like it. Because this is where you'll be staying. Now, get over here already! I'm just dying to meet all of you. Our little house will hold two of you at a time. We should probably start planning now.

So, it's a guest room. But this room is also where I spend a lot of my time. Mostly because my closet is in this room. Yes, Dan gets the "master closet" in the master bedroom (which is also teeny tiny ... I guess small closets were cool back in 1951?). And I get the closet in the guest bedroom. But I like it that way. As you know, I get up at the crack of dawn, so I get ready in this room each morning to ensure that I do not wake up sleeping beauty. Oh and this is also where I like to "think". And pray. And get away from Sherman. Just kidding, Sherm ... I would never do that.

BEFORE ...

DURING ...
Well, it's not me. But at least it's someone other than Dan ... it's Dan's Mom. She is a really good painter. Much better than I am. Thanks for the help, Jane!

AFTER ...
Want to see inside my closet? You'll have to go HERE.
Or HERE.
Sherman even helped put on new door knobs.
That was an old post way back over HERE.
The china cabinet is a family heirloom.
I'm not usually one for "antiques" ... but I do love a good china cabinet.
And there you have it. I would love to do a complete overhaul on this room as far as "decorating" goes. But that hasn't happened yet. Sorry guests ... I guess you're not first on my little priority list. What is first? Apparently work. And coffee.

What we did:
  • Painted walls green
  • Painted trim white
  • Painted ceiling (I would rather get a root canal than paint another ceiling)
  • New windows
  • New window blinds
  • New pretty glass door knobs

  3. I love all of the colors in this room!

My guest room looks like we have a 13 year old girl who lives with us. I got a little funky with the pillows and artwork.

  5. can i just say, first, that i'm jealous!?!? our living room gets transformed into a "guest bedroom" when we have guests over...

and sometimes we host MANY MORE than 2 guests at a time, so you can certainly do it!

also, we painted the ceiling in our living room, only to have it LEAK the first week of living there. mind you, we are on the second floor of a 3-story house.... which means it was leaking because water was pouring through my upstairs neighbors old windows, flooding her apartment, then leaking brown water through to our freshly painted ceiling onto our newly installed floors. talk about NIGHTMARE!

i'd totally stay in your hotel-chic guest room that's probably triple the size of my just-under-7'x8' "master-and-only" bedroom :)

    cheers!

  7. We had a situation like yours in a house we rented... Ammon had the "master" closet, and I had the closet in the room across the hall. It was nice to not be in each others' space first thing in the morning!

I'm totally coming to visit. That guest room is gorgeous.

  12. My closet was the guest bedroom closet for a LONG time. I just recently made Ryan redo the master so we could both squish (and I definitely mean squish) all of our clothes in there.

  15. The room looks amazing. I love the wall color. And the picture above the side of the bed. AND the china cabinet. My sister has one almost exactly like yours. I want it so badly. I want to actually put china in it. I, too, am not one for antiques. But the older a china cabinet, the better. The styles were just so much better.

  19. I am absolutely IN LOVE with that room! It looks so calm and relaxing. Would you happen to remember what color you painted the walls? That is the exact shade of green I have been envisioning for my bathroom.

  22. YES!
    those doorknobs.
they are reminiscent of my grandparents' house in tha coun-treh.
i want to live in a house that looks like your house.
mine looks like a shoe box.
maybe when i get OUT of nursing school, we can afford to get a house.
and take on fun, fun fixer-upper type things.
my husband is a plumber/electrician, not a contractor.
    OR an engineer.
    go dan!

  25. When I stumbled across the name of your blog, I got really excited because I love coffee. But then you said it had nothing to do with coffee so i got slightly dissapointed. But then i checked it out anyways and your blog is adorable so im excited again and you got a new follow:)

  26. I'll be there next weekend, does that work?

My closet is in our guest room too and I kinda love it. Even though the Mister's closet is bigger...I like having my own room. I'm pretty good at keeping it in a constant state of chaos.

  34. I'm relieved to know that I am not the only person who keeps their clothes in the guest room. Our house was built in the 50's as well and we have one super, teeny, tiny closet in our bedroom. I gave it to the hubs so that I could take over the guest room with my hair supplies, make-up, shoes, and clothes that don't fit into the dresser in our room. Someday my "dressing room" will turn into a nursery, and I'm already panicking about where all of my stuff is going to go. Why couldn't people back then have built larger closets?!

  37. I love how it turned out! What kind of paint finish did you use on the room? I love how you post all your before and after pictures, I am in the middle of remodeling and painting almost my whole house and ran into a really bad painting experience. I am using eggshell paint and thinking maybe I should try flat for the walls? I would love your advice. I have 1 wall that I spent 4 days on, 1 coat of primer, 4 coats of paint and I have to sand the whole wall down this week, not looking forward to it. Thanks :)
