playtime with sherman

My playtime with Sherman is a little different than my playtime with my nephew. For the last several days I have been in Chicago scooting around the hardwood floors on my knees, trying to make Jack laugh. I have been ducking behind couches and popping up from chairs, trying to get Jack to crack a smile. I have been singing songs off key, talking in silly, high-pitched voices and making stuffed animals sing and talk.

Until last night, I forgot how easy it is to keep a dog entertained.
Sherman and I had a little mother/pup bonding time last night ... with ice cubes.
This is our new favorite activity on these hot, 100+ degree days.
I throw ice cubes in the baby pool and Sherm dives nose first in to get them.

Saturday we are expecting 106.
Sunday 105.
Looks like I better get the freezer stocked with ice.
Happy Weekend!

P.S. Final Chicago recap happening soon ... but I just had to throw in a picture of Sherman before the weekend. I do not want any hate mail from all of you crazy dog lovers out there.

  4. we used to always have leftover ice from our big coolers, and we would dump it all in a pile in the yard and our dog would just be in HEAVEN!! lay in it, lick it, whatevs.

you should try this!! keeps them entertained for HOURS! or, until the ice melts ;)

    cheers to the weekend!

  6. oh, ice trays...
    gotta love em!
AND gotta love seeing them on the kitchen counter, EMPTY, when 'someone' doesn't bother to refill them...
or, maybe that's just me ;)
ONE DAY i will have a real ice maker.
and have i told you how gorgeous your chocolate lab is?

  7. I love the idea of the ice in the pool. I want to buy our new pup a pool but husband doesn't think she will like it. Bulldogs are not known for their swimming but I put out a bucket of water for her to play with and she loved it. I think she would find a wading pool delightful.

I introduced husband to Sherman today and he loves him as much as I do! Please give him a huge hug around the neck from us!

  8. Haha! True enough...pups are easily entertained! Give them ice cubes, or their tail to chase, or imaginary deer to hunt, you know... One of our dogs is an ice-cube-a-holic, the other could care less. Regardless, looks like Sherm is really happy that you're back home :-). Happy Weeknend Tiff!

  9. Oh my goodness, puppies are seriously just the cutest! My dogs also love ice cubs. It's funny, we go out of our way to buy fancy toys and things for them yet the simplest thing- like an ice cube- is entertainment enough!

  10. You're right...dogs are so easy to entertain. Love your little game with Sherman. I'm sure he loved it too!

  12. Cash LOVES ice... now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever met a dog who didn't like to chomp on some ice cubes! Last summer I froze one of his favorite toys in a block of ice and he licked it all day trying to get that toy out...haha either I'm brilliant or a terrible parent... let's go with brilliant. yes.

  17. I always dive into pools for ice cubes, always, mouth wide open.

Listen, I'm glad you had play time. I'm glad you had play time with Jack. I'm glad you sang off key, no one is perfect. No one.

I'm glad you posted a picture of Sherm, but did you have to post a picture of him looking like The Devil?

  26. It is wrong that one of my first thoughts after reading this was that I wanted to try it with one of my cat, just to see his reaction once he jumped in the paddling pool? He'd run after the ice cubes, he runs after anything I throw.

  27. My old roomies dogs loveddd ice cubes! So funny Sherman is a cutie! Love your blog, newest follower!

  28. What about the baby lovers! I want more Jack. I mean I love Sherman too but... consider this hate mail.

  30. Sherm is such a cutie. Our family dog will nottttt get in the pool no matter how hot it gets, but if there's a dirty puddle? Heck yeah, he's in there.

  31. All dogs deserve their own wading pool. And icey cubes. I'm glad you showcased this today, as awesome as Jack is, It's hard to go more than a few days without seeing Sherman. Thank you.

  33. An ice cube game in this weather sounds ideal. And you never know. Jack could like that game too :)

When I sing loud, my pups always run up to me like something is wrong. Maybe that should tell me something...?

    Have fun with your ice!

  36. gahhh!103 here in MD today and it's supposed to be hotter tomorrow. Thank goodness I have a pool, however.. even that hardly keeps you cool in this heat. I have to say though, I'd take the heat over the cold ANY day! :D

  41. Glad you have found a little game to keep Sherman cool! These hot days are miserable!!!!
I think my son would enjoy your and Sherman's game. He's two and it sounds like his cup of tea LOL

  42. I talk to babies and any kind of animal in a high pitched voice. "Oh look at the baby!!!" (Say in high pitch voice). "Beep beep beep" (say in high pitch voice) Anything small gets that from me. I almost cannot help myself.

And friend... I am so sorry about the heat. I saw your are on the weather channel map and felt so bad for you. It gets up to a 100 or more where I live too. I live just far enough away from the ocean that I don't get the breeze. Damn canyon.

But my real question here is.. do you get in the baby pool too? Like just sit there with an iced tea or a coors light? I would probably do that. I keep it classy, you know?

  43. You should make that boy some doggy ice cream, too! It's easy- take fat free plain yogurt (no sugar), the tub size, not the single-serving size, then about 1/2 cup of peanut butter, then any additional dog-friendly flavors you/he might want (banana, pumpkin, blueberries, etc.) Blend that all up, pour it into small pyrex containers (I like them because they have lids for stacking in the freezer), freeze them, and make him happy. It's cheaper than Frosty Paws, plus no extra preservatives or anything.
In the meantime, I'll settle for a video of ice cube diving... love Sherman!!

  46. I agree with Erin above, your dog is really pretty. When my 3 older nieces and nephews were your nephews age it seem as though my cat was easier to entertain. Now all of them (including the youngest - 2) are just crazzy!!

  47. Sherman is lucky to have great parents! Can I come play in the pool too? haha

  49. Yay for a Sherman photo! I'm not sure if Snoopy would know what to do with ice cubes -- he usually eats up any food we give him so fast that he swallows it whole! xo

  50. I'm definitely one of those crazy dog lovers and so glad to see a pic of Sherman. I just love him. I would totally be okay with you putting me in your will to become Sherman's backup mommy (you know, because I'm sure you have noooobody else who wants him ha!).

  51. Did you notice is your Sherman/Jack voice the same by chance? My Harlow/Knox voice is identical and always seems to confuse both of them when I shout "No!" usually because one of the two is peeing without pants on...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Tiff - the Sherms, he gets me. He gets me EVERY gosh dang time.

I don't think I needed to leave a comment for you to know that though....

  53. I love Sherman's facial expression! I hope it cools down for you guys (and this is coming from a Florida girl)- the heat you're having is crazy.
