the day I got on a swing

Sherman and I get up around 5am every morning and head out to our local park. Sherm loves the park because there is bunny poop for him to sniff. And I love the park because it makes me feel like a kid again.

We walk by the jungle gym and the swing set and every morning I think to myself, 'I should swing'. It's been years and years since I've sat on a swing.
But, I don't stop. I don't swing. I always keep walking.
Because I don't have time to swing. Because I'm an adult.
Because it's my responsibility to walk Sherman and keep him on a leash.
However, this morning I decided to put down the leash.
And swing.
(and give Sherm the new nickname of Dumbo)
Dumbo thought I was going to die.
No really, he did. See those eyes?
He was begging for me to come to solid ground.
But, once he realized that I was not going to burst into flames, he stood quietly beside me as I swung... at 5am ... by myself.

You should try it sometime.
Put down the leash.
And swing.

  1. Oh, love it! The last time I took time to swing was YEARS ago, but I can still remember it. Stopping at a park with the hubbster (boyfriend at the time), at like 10p one night on the way home from some event I'm sure and we both swung. FUN memories!

  5. You are right. Everyone should take a moment to swing, or smell the roses, or whatever. Just take a moment.

  19. The look on the sweet dogs face is adorable. I used to love to swing, these days it is causing immediate motion sickness? Must be the baby in the belly. I'm glad you took time out to swing!

  28. I swing ALL the time. But only for short doses because like Sherman, Harlow freaks out as well! I thought he was the only crazy dog to do this. It's bizarre. So one day I put him in my lap- and we both sat on the swing and he was as content as could be. And I can only imagine what we must have looked like...

  29. so in my blog feed, i saw this post, "the day i got on a swing" and the thumbprint photo next to it. but it looked like a band-aid.

    i was so confused.

glad you didn't die. apparently sherm and i are spazzes.

  30. 5am? I feel ashamed and lazy now of my 5:30am wake-up. Fail.

I hate the idea that people have to do "adult" things. We can make adult choices, but when we lose our inner kid, we lose who we are. Love that you got on the swings, and let Dumbo have some fun too.

  31. I really should take that advice.. and go swinging with Snoopy (or, go swinging as he watches and hopefully takes it better than Sherman did). Just not at 5 AM! xo

  33. Swinging is the best feeling! I really need to start using my "yoga" pants for something other than sitting on the couch! Maybe tomorrow I will get out and walk to the park, just not at 5 AM!
